FE.M: The Festival

The Microarchitecture Festival Fe.M is an innovative event that combines architecture, design, and the local territory. Organized by Fe.M ets - Alice Cecchini, Marco Dini, and Roman Joliy - and sponsored by Pesaro 2024 Italian Capital of Culture, the festival aims to enhance the Marche hinterland through microarchitecture works that narrate the territory in new and unexpected ways. The works are located in the municipalities of Borgo Pace, Sant'Angelo in Vado, Lunano, and Piobbico, and will be open to visitors until the end of October, animated by events throughout the fall.

The festival's exhibition is set up at Palazzo Collegio Raffaello in Urbino and will be open to the public until the end of September. For more information on events and to view the map of the microarchitectures, please visit the official website: www.festivalmicroarchitettura.com.

Suspended Weave: An Installation in Sant'Angelo in Vado

Among the festival's installations, "Suspended Weave" stands out for its creative reinterpretation of local history. Located in the “Campo della Pieve” area of Sant’Angelo in Vado, this microarchitecture, designed by RARA Studio architects Rinaldo D’Alessandro, Giovanni Fabbri, and Margherita Lia Tommasi, offers a visual narrative between the past, present, and future. The remains of the “Domus del Mito,” an ancient 1st-century A.D. Roman villa known for its magnificent mosaics, are highlighted by this modern structure made of wooden and rope tiles.

The structure’s roof, with its spaced tiles, filters natural light to create evocative and ever-changing shadow plays. The artisanal technique of "stitched wood" gives the installation an honest and imperfect aesthetic that harmonizes with the site's historical and natural context. The minimalist supporting structure creates a space where light and shadows evoke the forms of an inverse peristyle, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a unique sensory experience, where the ancient Roman walls are mirrored by “green walls” of grass cut along the lines of the archaeological remains.

"Suspended Weave" invites visitors to perceive archaeological remains not just as historical testimonies but as aesthetic entities that shape the identity of the territory. The roof becomes a narrative element that connects past, present, and future through visual signs and symbols in the landscape.

Fe.M: Principles and Vision

The Microarchitecture Festival is born with the goal of placing the humanistic values of architecture and landscape back at the center of public debate. With the principle of “Inhabiting the world with sensitivity and imagining other ways of being together,” Fe.M proposes a reflection on living built and natural spaces more consciously, rediscovering the beauty and harmony of places often overlooked by large urban developments.

Microarchitectures become ephemeral tools to read the landscape. Without a pre-defined function, these structures offer spatial experiences that interact with space, light, the ground, and the sky, actively engaging residents and visitors in a reinterpretation of the territory.

Through these installations, Fe.M aims to raise public awareness about the importance of landscape and the way of living it, offering residents a new vision of their environment and tourists a tool to discover and understand the Marche territory in a more profound and sensitive way.

Fe.M's Future Goals

The first edition of Fe.M involved four teams of national and international architects who designed and self-built four installations in the Marche region. From next year, the festival aims to expand with an International Competition open to young architects, creating a platform to showcase creativity and sensitivity in reinterpreting places of historical and natural value.

Additionally, Fe.M will collaborate with the “Festival des Cabanes aux sources du lac d’Annecy” now in its ninth edition in France, creating an international synergy to promote new ways of experiencing the landscape and rethinking architecture.
